Salt Caverns

PB Energy Storage Services (formerly PB-KBB) is the nation’s leading engineer and constructor of underground storage and related surface facilities.  The firm was founded with the objective of providing a full range of quality services in the highly specialized field of subsurface systems technology, with particular emphasis on underground hydrocarbon storage and related facilities.

Over the years, our capabilities have been enhanced by the acquisition of complementary engineering, construction and service firms.  Key to these capabilities is a professional staff with the technical expertise and innovative spirit necessary to offer effective solutions in today’s dynamic regulatory and business environments.

PB Energy Storage Services is wholly owned by Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), a century-old firm ranked among the Engineering News-Record’s top 50 U.S. engineering firms. Parsons Bricnkerhoff is the professional services arm of Balfour Beatty, a world-class infrastructure services business operating across the infrastructure lifecycle.

Originally formed as a joint venture partnership in 1977 between Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and Kavernen Bau und Betriebs-GmbH (KBB) the preeminent German subsurface storage and solution mining technology firm, PB-KBB was incorporated in 1978.

In 1989, PB-KBB gained complementary expertise with the strategic acquisition of Fenix & Scisson, Inc, a firm renowned since 1950 for development of both solution and hard rock mined storage caverns.

With the acquisition of Underground Technology Group (formerly Sofregaz US) in 2001, PB further consolidated it’s position of industry leadership.

In 2002, PB-KBB became a wholly-owned subsidiary of PB and the name was changed to PB Energy Storage Services.
